Mike was such a lovely lad, one of world’s nice guys. We were at Lord Wandsworth College together in the 1970s. We didn’t see a lot of each other after school days but in more recent years we were at a few reunions together and it was always a pleasure to see him. Two things bound us together though. We were both part of the great LWC rugby 1st XV of 1975 which went through the season unbeaten. A feat that not even Jonny Wilkinson could emulate. Mike was a super reliable full-back a great tackler and kicker. Secondly, on army cadet camp on the island of Mull in the summer of 1975, we took a row boat out to sea with another bloke whose name escapes me. The sea got rough and we were drifting into quite perilous open sea. We managed to get back to shore after a desperate rowing effort that left our hands blistered and bleeding from the oars. It was touch and go for a while. We would always recall that episode and count our blessings when we did meet up. RIP old friend.
